Didn't really know what to expect from this, but it turned out to be a totally sweet performance all round.
Basically there was 3 b-boys: Mouse (World B-Boy Champion), Chimp (professional popper, bit like Elsewhere but not as good) and Steady (Guiness worldrecord holder for most windmills in 30 seconds), and one Dj: Dj G-Kut (wicked scratch Dj and live laptopper)
The format was a mixture of both structured and freestyle breakin, with spoken testamonies form the 3 dudes and plently of phat hip-hop and scratching. Each one spoke about how they got into their passion and how it has changed their lives for the better, then did some moves, and it kinda cycled like that.
After the main "performace" bit, Steady came out and did a bit of crowd interaction, where he introduced the other 2, gave them a few minutes freestlye each, then he rocked out for a bit. Then they gave the stage to G-Kut and that was the balls. I'd never heard of him before, but he was shit-hot and really got the crowd bouncing in their seats.
The whole thing lasted about an hour, which was a bit shorter than I was expecting. IMO they could have spent more time getting a bit of a party vibe going when G-Kut was playing, as everyone was brimming at that point. I guess there's only so long that someone can breakdance for though.
All in all it was a very impressive array of techniques that couldn't be more urban and contemporary if they tried. Absolutely amazing dance form all 3 b-boys, showing very different styles of breakin. Mouse - with a technical, traditional style with some wicked variations, Steady - with his animated random-but-ordered almost fit-like style, and Chimp - with gravity and muscle defying robot-movements and pops (still not as goos as Elsewhere though). The accompanying music was just as impressive, with G-Kut's incredibly tight scratching and wicked choice of tunes; some classic, some modern, some of which I'd never heard before (maybe his own?) and one of which I must get hold of cos it blew my head.
I'd give the whole thing 8/10. Like I said, a bit more tuneage would have been good, and more hyping of the crowd wouldn't have gone amiss either. Maybe they could have done with a separate MC or summat. Saying that though, it was an excellent performance by 4 very talented and hardworking individuals. I recommend catching it if you can.
