So was just wondering, how does one go about to start dabbling into production?

Im sure theres hundreds of software programs out there, but was wondering where is a good place to start and what instruments / hardware is necessary. Like is it best to have a midi controller / keyboard etc? Or can you mess around with it with just regular computer setup?

I think i have a copy of ableton somewhere but never really messed with it since ive only been learning to mix.

There's probably some topics on here somewhere, i'll be looking for in the mean time.

Thanks ahead of time!

id say

first step - get a copy of reason and a decent set of headphones and have a bash on that for 6 months (disregard all of the factory sound bank samples as they are utter shit and get yourself some decent sounds to work with before you attempt anything

second step - if you get on well with reason you can make the leap to buy a decent set up this could be one of a million different set ups really and your time on reason will healp to determine what you would like to work with

i use 50 / 50 hardware / software
skink uses 100% software
indigo virus uses 60/ 40 hardwar / software

as you see everyone gets there own kind of comfort zone

Thank you mr. vapour, more to come!

Oh and if you dont know hardly anything about music production, is it pretty much like learning anything, just get after it and mess with everything figuring out what everything does etc. ?

if yer just startin out n have NO ideas about sequencing and stuff like that id give multi trackers a try n get used to layering sounds beats and stuff
when you get more confident about whats going on try reason or another program wich offers a "all in one" kinda scenario
